In the wine-growing area around
Lake Caldaro, Merlot finds the climatic conditions it needs to produce
the best possible results.
“ Merlot is a wine I really like. I’m going to buy more land to grow Merlot grapes very soon because I feel that Caldaro has the perfect climate for producing great Merlot wines.”
Merlot is a red grape variety that has its origins in the French Bordeaux region. It spread to Italy at the end of the 18th century. In South Tyrol, where there are deep and loamy soils and a mild climate, this grape variety has been cultivated for over a hundred years. The name comes from the French word “merle”, meaning “blackbird”, and is a reference to the blackbird’s liking for the grapes. Merlot has a ruby red color, becoming garnet red with increasing age. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and intensive with delicate herbal notes.
